Horror Movie Fans, Are You Ready for 2024?

As a horror movie fan myself, I would like to say that 2024 is shaping out to be a big win for horror films. Last year there was an array of horror films, however, only a couple caught my eye. It was disappointing, to say the least. However, 2024 could change that completely. With two already critically acclaimed horror films, Immaculate and The First Omen,  2024 is reviving the horror genre. To make things easier for you with the massive amount of horror releases, here is a list of the 2024 horror films that everyone, including myself, should be excited about:

Immaculate

Director

Release Date

March 22nd, 2022, On Streaming Service Now

Cast

Sydney Sweeney , Álvaro Morte , Benedetta Porcaroli

Synopsis

“Cecilia, an American nun of devout faith, embarks on a new journey in a remote convent in the picturesque Italian countryside. Cecilia's warm welcome quickly devolves into a nightmare as it becomes clear her new home harbors a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors.”

My Thoughts

I haven't seen this film yet, but I've heard great things about it. Sweeney's portrayal of a 'scream queen' has received a lot of attention, and I'm particularly looking forward to her performance. The movie appears to be both chilling and creative, and I'm definitely planning to watch it. Once I've seen it, I'll share a detailed movie review with my thoughts.

The First Omen

Director

Release Date

April 5th, 2024; Now Streaming Free on Hulu

Nell Tiger Free, Ralph Ineson,  Sonia Braga

“The First Omen is a prequel to the 1976 horror classic The Omen1. The movie follows Margaret Daino, an American woman sent to Rome to begin her service to the church as a nun at an orphanage. However, strange occurrences lead Margaret to question her own faith as a sinister evil begins to insidiously invade her life. The official synopsis for The First Omen, from 20th Century Studios, reads: When a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate”

My Thoughts

“Movie Review of the First Omen is up now on my website*

Abigail

Director

Release Date

April 19th, 2024; Available to Rent On Demand

Cast

Melissa Barrera, Kathryn Newton , Dan Stevens

Synopsis

“The movie follows a group of kidnappers who abduct the daughter of a powerful underworld figure and demand a $50 million ransom. However, they are unaware that the girl is not a normal child123. The film has a wacky high-concept premise, involving a child-sized vampire ballerina”

My Thoughts

This is another film that is on my queue to watch. The movie looks fun and engaging. The trailer does it justice. Melissa Barrera was let go from the new Scream due to her support of Palestine, so I am glad that she is getting the love and support that she deserves. The plot is ridiculous, but I like it because of how unique it is.

Late Night With the Devil

Director

Release Date

March 22nd, 2024; Now Streaming on Amazon Prime Video

Cast

David Dastmalchian, Laura Gordon, Ian Bliss

Synopsis

“a found-footage film about a 1977 live broadcast of a late-night talk show1. The film purports to be derived from a rediscovered master tape of an episode from the show's sixth season, broadcast on Halloween 19772. The host, Jack Delroy, decides to go big for a Halloween night edition during sweeps week with a guest who claims to commune with the devil1. During the live television broadcast, havoc unfolds when Delroy interviews a parapsychologist and the subject of her recent book, a young teenager who was the sole survivor of a Satanic church's mass suicide.”

My Thoughts

This film actually was not on my radar. It didn’t have that much press noe that many trailers that was shown on TV. Nobody really talked about the film. It wasn’t until I saw a clip on TikTok that had a very chilling scene in it. I was engaged and wanted to see more. Then, another TikTok came across my feed that discussed the plot of the film in more depth. So, the film is now on my radar and I am intrigued to watch it.

The Strangers: Chapter 1

Director

Release Date

May 17th, 2024: Available to Rent On Demand

Cast

Madelaine Petsch , Froy Gutierrez , Rachel Shenton

Synopsis

“The film follows a young couple who move to the Pacific Northwest to start a new life. However, their new life gets off to a terrifying start when a broken-down vehicle forces them to stay at a remote vacation home, leaving them to be stalked relentlessly by three masked murderers.”

My Thoughts

I have heard a lot about this film franchise and how the concept is based on a true story. I like the thriller-type horror movies where its just the victims, the perpetrators, and their wits. The film seems to not have that many characters, yet it is still inviting and chilling. This would be a good movie to watch as a night in with people.

A Quiet Place: Day One

Director

Release Date

June 28th, 2024

Cast

Lupita Nyong'o , Joseph Quinn , Alex Wolff

Synopsis

The film is set at the beginning of the invasion as humanity scrambles to survive, before the events of the original film,

My Thoughts

I was so hyped for the release of this film. Lupita always blows me away with her acting, and I couldn't wait to see her in this popular franchise. The films are so intense and suspenseful, I was totally hooked the whole time. The story was so creative, scary, and full of surprises. No doubt, this movie is at the top of my watchlist for 2024.

Maxxxine

Director

Release Date

July 5th, 2024

Cast

Mia Goth , Elizabeth Debicki , Moses Sumney

As the body count rises, secrets from Maxine's past threaten to surface, intertwining her quest for fame with a deadly game of survival”

My Thoughts

It will be sad to see this trilogy go. Pearl and X was very good horror scares. The basics of horror was present, yetthe films were not too simple. I especially like the themes that these films follow. Aging, fame, and the horrors that come with it. Mia Goth should have got some awards for her portrayal of the titular characters. I cannot wait to see how the trilogy ends.

Longlegs

Director

Release Date

July 12th, 2024

Cast

Maika Monroe , Nicholas Cage , Alicia Witt

When FBI agent Lee Harker is assigned to a serial killer cold case, their investigation leads them down a rabbit hole riddled with disturbing discoveries and the occult at the center of it all. When the trail of evidence reveals a personal connection, it becomes a race against time to prevent another murder”

My Thoughts

The rave about this movie is crazy! There are critics saying every frame in the film is nightmarish. People are saying they couldn’t even get through the film. All that does is make me want to watch it more.

Trap

Director

August 9th, 2024

Cast

Josh Hartnett , Hayley Mills , Marnie McPhail

Synopsis

Cooper, a serial killer dubbed "The Butcher", joins his daughter at a concert for pop star Lady Raven, an event he realizes is a trap set by police to catch him.”

My Thoughts

As crazy and the plot is, M. Night does a surprisingly good job at making the craziness make sense. I can already feel the intensity of the film through the trailer and with a film like this I cannot help to wonder how it will end.

Alien: Romulus

Director

Release Date

August 12th, 2024

Cast

Cailee Spaeny , David Jonsson , Archie Renaux

Synopsis

“The film will focus on a new young group of characters who come face to face with the terrifying Xenomorphs. Alien: Romulus is a stand-alone film and takes place in a time not yet explored in the Alien franchise."

My Thoughts

I'm glad that after all these years, the Alien and Predator universe is still going strong. The Alien films are intense and eerie, and the special effects are incredibly realistic. I have high hopes for the upcoming film. I was a fan of the 2022 film "Prey," which served as a prequel to "Predator." Hopefully, this new film will be just as good.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Director

Release Date

September 6th, 2024

Cast

Michael Keaton , Jenna Ortega , Winona Ryder

Synopsis

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is the sequel to the original Tim Burton classic that starred Michael Keaton and Wynona Rider in a horror-comedy that involved ghosts trying to scare off new homebuyers from taking their house.”

My Thoughts

This film is one of the more enjoyable comedy-horror films compared to the others on the list. Sometimes I think it's needed. While jump scares and anxiety-filled horror films are good, comedy horror is just as enjoyable. Keaton and Ryder returning for this film brings the nostalgia of the original. Also, I believe Ortega being included brings a modern-day feel. Ortega has cemented herself as a modern-day 'scream queen,' which makes the hype even more real.

The Front Room

Director

Release Date

September 6th, 2024

Cast

Brandy, Kathryn Hunter, Andrew Burnap

Synopsis

A young, newly pregnant couple are forced to take responsibility for an estranged stepmother.”

My Thoughts

Brandy's upcoming role in a horror film for 2024 has caught my attention, mainly because it marks her return to the big screen after a significant hiatus. Seeing her in a different genre has piqued my curiosity, Additionally, the fact that the film is produced by A24 only adds to my level of anticipation, as this production company is known for its intense work.  The film appears to be  more towards the thriller genre but still manages to capture a sense of horror. From the glimpses I've seen, Brandy's acting seems to be a perfect fit for the tone of the film, and I'm eager to see her performance.

Smile 2

Director

Release Date

October 18th, 2024

Cast

Kyle Gallner , Naomi Scott , Lukas Gage

Synopsis

“The movie "Smile 2" follows global pop sensation Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) as she experiences terrifying and inexplicable events while preparing for a world tour. Overwhelmed by the horrors and pressures of fame, Skye must confront her dark past to regain control of her life.”

My Thoughts

One of my favorite horror films in 2022 is getting a sequel. I just hope the film doesn’t fall into the pattern of the sequels not being as good as the first film. I like how the smile curse is now being spread to a bigger population, and I like the idea of featuring a pop star living through it. I can't help but get the sense of the themes being a pop star being worked so hard that they go crazy. I think this is evident and reflects the real-world crisis of fame.
