Predicting The Next Big Emmy Winners: Comedy Categories

This year's nominees in the comedy categories is by far on eof the hardest. With so much comedic gold and moments, I found it hard to just choose one winner. Here are my predictions for the 2024 Emmy's Comedy categories:

Best Comedy Series

Collider.com

Abbott Elementary (ABC)

The Bear (FX)

Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO/Max)

Hacks (HBO/Max)

Only Murders in the Building (Hulu)

Palm Royale (Apple TV+)

Reservation Dogs (FX)

What We Do in the Shadows (FX)

My Hopeful Winner:  Abbot Elementary

Reason: Abbot blends humor with heart incredibly well. The public school systems commentary offers a unique and refreshing take on the educational system, focusing on the dedicated teachers and staff of a struggling public school. Abbott Elementary accurately portrays the challenges faced by underfunded schools, while also celebrating the resilience and humor of its characters. Lastly, the cast works well with each other.

Best Actor in a Comedy Series

Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows, FX)

Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm, HBO/Max)

Steve Martin (Only Murders in the Building, Hulu)

Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building, Hulu)

Jeremy Allen White (The Bear, FX)

D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs, FX)

My Hopeful Winner: D’ Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs)

Reason: While I haven't watched Reservation Dogs yet, I'd love to see history made at the Emmys. D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai winning would be a groundbreaking moment, and it would be refreshing to see a new face among the award recipients.

Best Actress in a Comedy Series

Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary, ABC)

Ayo Edebiri (The Bear, FX)

Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building, Hulu)

Maya Rudolph (Loot, Apple TV+)

Jean Smart (Hacks, HBO/Max)

Kristen Wiig (Palm Royale, Apple TV+)

My Hopeful Winner;  Quinta Brunson (Abbot Elementary)

Reason: While this is a tough category, Quinta Brunson's Janine is a strong contender. Her comedic genius and ability to bring Janine to life make her a standout in the series.Beyond her comedic moments, Janine's character is also deeply relatable. Her struggles with self-doubt, her desire for validation, and her unwavering belief in her students make her a sympathetic and engaging protagonist.

Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

Lionel Boyce (The Bear, FX)

Paul W. Downs (Hacks, HBO/Max)

Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear, FX)

Paul Rudd (Only Murders in the Building, Hulu)

Tyler James Williams (Abbott Elementary, ABC)

Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live, NBC)

My Hopeful Winner: Tyler James Williams (Abbot Elementary)

Reason: I think it is about time for Williams to win this award. I feel as if his performance this season made Eddie have more heart and more lovable. The way that his character is developing onto a more comfortable person is done well because of Williams acting talents. Williams masterfully conveys Eddie's internal struggles, his hopes, and his unwavering commitment to his students all white keeping it funny and lighthearted.

Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Carol Burnett (Palm Royale, Apple TV+)

Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear, FX)

Hannah Einbinder (Hacks, HBO/Max)

Janelle James (Abbott Elementary, ABC)

Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary, ABC)

Meryl Streep (Only Murders in the Building, Hulu)

My Hopeful Winner; Janelle James (Abbot Elementary)

Reason: James is another actress who I feel is underappreciated in their categories. The most memorable character in Abbot is Principal Ava. The way James can portray Ava as a funny character with one-liners and perfect comedic timing for someone who displays surprising vulnerability is a masterclass. Watching Ava unfold as a character with many layers is due to James' interpretation of the character.

Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series

Jon Bernthal (The Bear, FX)

Matthew Broderick (Only Murders in the Building, Hulu)

Ryan Gosling (Saturday Night Live, NBC)

Christopher Lloyd (Hacks, HBO/Max)

Bob Odenkirk (The Bear, FX)

Will Poulter (The Bear, FX)

My Hopeful Winner: Jon Bernthal (The Bear)

Reason: Berthanl’s portrayal of Mikey is raw, nuanced, and deeply moving. His performance is essential to the series' success and deserves an Emmy Award. Mikey moves the plot along for many different characters, so his performance should be ot the top of the list.

Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series

Olivia Colman (The Bear, FX)

Jamie Lee Curtis (The Bear, FX)

Kaitlin Olson (Hacks, HBO/Max)

Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Only Murders in the Building, Hulu)

Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live, NBC)

Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live, NBC)

My Hopeful Winner: Jamie Lee Curtis

Reason:  Her portrayal of Donna Berzatto is nuanced and emotionally charged. She's got this amazing way of showing us both her tough side and her soft side. Her scenes with her children are super emotional and real. She's a total pro and deserves an Emmy for her amazing performance.

Best Directing for a Comedy Series

Randall Einhorn (Abbott Elementary, ABC)

Christopher Storer (The Bear, FX)

Ramy Youssef (The Bear, FX)

Guy Ritchie (The Gentlemen, Netflix)

Lucia Aniello (Hacks, HBO/Max)

Mary Lou Belli (The Ms. Pat Show, BET)

My Hopeful Winner: Christopher Storer (The Bear)

Reason:  The way Storer weaves together intense drama, hilarious dialogue, and a super-relatable look at the culinary world is just mind-blowing. From the complex characters to the authentic portrayal of a bustling restaurant kitchen, every episode is a rollercoaster ride.

Best Writing for a Comedy Series

Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary, ABC)

Christopher Storer (The Bear, FX)

Meredith Scardino, Sam Means (Girls5eva, Netflix)

Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, Jen Statsky (Hacks, HBO/Max)

Chris Kelly, Sarah Schneider (The Other Two, HBO/Max)

Jake Bender, Zach Dunn (What We Do in the Shadows, FX)

My Hopeful Winner: Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary)

Reason: Quinta Brunson's writing for "Abbott Elementary" is a key factor in the show's success. She creates relatable characters, writes sharp dialogue, and explores heartfelt moments while positively representing Black women in television. Her work makes the show a must-watch.
