Two Emmy Awards ceremonies were held this year, with the 2023 ceremony being postponed, but the more, the better. The television season has been tumultuous due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, however, the nominees have delivered outstanding TV performances. Below are my predictions for the winners in the Drama Categories at the 2024 Emmy Awards:
Best Drama Series
The Crown (Netflix)
Fallout (Prime Video)
The Gilded Age (HBO)
The Morning Show (Apple TV+)
Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Prime Video)
Shogun (FX)
Slow Horses (Apple TV+)
3 Body Problem (Netflix)
My Hopeful Winner: Shogun
Reason: Shogun is a refreshing story that interconnects two vastly different men from two vastly different worlds. It is a historical drama that illustrates 17th-century Japan, showcasing the complex political landscape and the impact of cultural exchange. I think that having diverse stories with meticulously accurate details deserves an award due to its boldness and diverse storytelling. Shogun leads the pack with 25 Emmy nominations, a very impressive feat.
Best Actress in a Drama Series
Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show, Apple TV+)
Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age, HBO/Max)
Maya Erskine (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Prime Video)
Anna Sawai (Shogun, FX)
Imelda Staunton (The Crown, Netflix)
Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show, Apple TV+)
My Hopeful Winner: Anna Sawai (Shogun)
Reason: One of the things that made Shogun enticing to me was Anna Sawai portrayal of Lady Mariko. Mariko was the essential piece that drove the plot of Shogun. Her capability of portraying a large range of emotions, from vulnerability to strength, garnered a lot of critical acclaim. I would love to see Sawai make history as well since she is the first Asian actress to earn a nomination in this category.
Best Actor in a Drama Series
Idris Elba (Hijack, Apple TV+)
Donald Glover (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Prime Video)
Walton Goggins (Fallout, Prime Video)
Gary Oldman (Slow Horses, Apple TV+)
Hiroyuki Sanada (Shogun, FX)
Dominic West (The Crown, Netflix)
My Hopeful Winner: Hiroyuki Sanada (Shogun)
Reason: Sanada’s historical Emmy nomination is well deserved given his portrayal of the complex and powerful Lord Toranga. The authenticity of his performance is what's making him stand out the most to me from his fellow nominees.
Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Christine Baranski (The Gilded Age, HBO/Max)
Nicole Beharie (The Morning Show, Apple TV+)
Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown, Netflix)
Greta Lee (The Morning Show, Apple TV+)
Lesley Manville (The Crown, Netflix)
Karen Pittman (The Morning Show, Apple TV+)
Holland Taylor (The Morning Show, Apple TV+)
My Hopeful Winner: Nicole Beharie (The Morning Show)
Reason: Even though I do not watch any shows in this category, I have seen Beharie in other projects. She is an amazing actress who has had nothing but acclaim for her role as Chris Hunter on The Morning Show. She is a young Black woman whose career would heavily advance with this prestigious award. Hopefully, she seals the deal with that Emmy in hand.
Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Tadanobu Asano (Shogun, FX)
Billy Crudup (The Morning Show, Apple TV+)
Mark Duplass (The Morning Show, Apple TV+)
Jon Hamm (The Morning Show, Apple TV+)
Takehiro Hira (Shogun, FX)Jack Lowden (Slow Horses, Apple TV+)
Jonathan Pryce (The Crown, Netflix)
My Hopeful Winner: Tadanobu Asano (Shogun)
Reason: Asono delivers a very complex character of Yabusige. His character is conflicted about his decisions in a society made of political turmoil. That is what makes him a memorable character. This nomination, and hopeful win, would shine more light on Asian actors an the characters that they portray.
Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series
Néstor Carbonell (Shogun, FX)
Paul Dano (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Prime Video)
Tracy Letts (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, HBO/Max)
Jonathan Pryce (Slow Horses, Apple TV+)
John Turturro (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Prime Video)
My Hopeful Winner: Nestor Carbonell (Shogun)
Reason: Nestor’s performance was very nuanced and it added more plot to Shogun. His character was the catalyst for the show.
Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series
Michaela Coel (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Prime Video)
Claire Foy (The Crown, Netflix)
Marcia Gay Harden (The Morning Show, Apple TV+)
Sarah Paulson (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Prime Video)
Parker Posey (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Prime Video)
My Hopeful Winner: Michaela Coel (Mr. & Mrs. Smith)
Reason: Coel won an Emmy in 2021 for her writing in the limited series, “I May Destroy You.” This solidified her status as a talented writer and storyteller. She has proven she can do drama, comedies, action, etc. I am very familiar with Coel’s work and I think she is a amazing actress. I want her to win simply because I would love to see her resume grow and her work being further recognized by the Emmys would be well-deserved.
Best Writing for a Drama Series
Peter Morgan, Meriel Sheibani-Clare (The Crown, Netflix)
Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Graham Wagner (Fallout, Prime Video)
Francesca Sloane, Donald Glover (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Prime Video)
Rachel Kondo, Justin Marks (Shogun, FX)
Rachel Kondo, Caillin Puente (Shogun, FX)
Will Smith (Slow Horses, Apple TV+)
My Hopeful Winner: Rachel Kondo, Caillin Puente (Shogun)
Reason: The episode that the two wrote together, “Crimson Sky” had some compelling storytelling elements. The narrative was engaging from beginning to end with even stronger character development. The exploration of characters and their complex morals was highlighted well. It was really a standout episode.
Best Directing for a Drama Series
Stephen Daldry (The Crown, Netflix)
Mimi Leder (The Morning Show, Apple TV+)
Hiro Murai (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Prime Video) Frederick E.O. Toye
(Shogun, FX)
Saul Metzstein (Slow Horses, Apple TV+)
Salli Richardson-Whitfield (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, HBO/Max)
Hopeful Winner: Frederick E.O Toye (Shogun)
Reason: The direction for “Crimson Sky” and the writing go hand and hand together. I believe that both were successfully crafted well in this episode. It was visually stunning and had emotionally resonant sequences. I could tell that the crew thought hard about the execution of this episode and it came to fruition.
