SAG-AFTRA: Actors, Writers, & More STRIKES Back!

As the strike progresses more and more Hollywood figures show support. Actors, writers, director, etc.

The film/television industry is once again taking a big hit as the SAG-AFTRA strike continues. Actors are now starting to get involved with some showing how little they get paid for their hard work. Joining the strike is Mark Ruffalo, Hilary Duff, the cast of Shameless, and many other notable figures. As the actors join the picket line, this will mark the first time when actors AND writers strike at the same time since 1960. A contract have yet to be renewed and actors and writer alike are DEMANDING their pay. Actors will no longer be able to promote their films, do press junkets, nor attend premieres as long as this strike is going on. Here are some of the residual checks that was shared:

Orange Is The New Black actress Kimiko Glenn shared a TikTok of her check from the award winning show. The check is a whopping.... $27.00. Netflix's premium subscription is $19.00/month, that's majority of Glenn's residual check. Glenn also gave more insight of her feelings toward her work and pay balance in the show. In a separate TikTok video , Glenn said this, “People were bartenders still [and] people had their second jobs still. They were f—king famous as s—t, like internationally famous … but had to keep their second jobs because they couldn’t afford to not!”. Orange Is The New Black was nominated for 165 awards, winning 46 during it's run. Yet, that unfortunately amounts to nothing if the work isn't being beneficial. At the end of the day actors are human who work so that they can afford to live.

In 2023, Abbott Elementary won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy Series. But, the actors are not getting the Golden Globe pay. William Sanford have made that clear after he showed his check to the world through Twitter. Stanford portrays the very loveable and free-living janitor, Mr. Johnson in the TV series. Stanford have been apart of the Screen Actors Guild for 32-years...just to show his check of 0.03 cents and another check for 0.05 cent. That is apparently how much his loyalty cost. The cost of the postage of the check costs more than the actual checks pay. William Stanford shows his support for the strike by saying, "I'm standing in solidarity with the writers, and we're going to be on strike until we get what we need to make a living'.

Newly awarded Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis took to Instagram to show her frustration:

And there are even so much more after that. Productions such as Deadpool 3, Wicked, and Venom 3 have halted due to the strike. Some productions have been halted until 'further notice' as the release dates are still developing. Even the 2023 Emmy's might have to be delayed if negotiations are not concluded. This wouldn't be the first award show being jeopardized by the strike. Earlier this year, the Tony Awards (hosted by Ariana Debose) had no writers. Debose had to improvise by writing some of the lines and jokes on her hand! If conclusions do not happen quick then more shows, movies, and more will become less thought about. Here are some major productions that will get delayed:

HBO's Euphoria have been pushed back from 2025 to 2026. This means that most of the actors will be in their 30s. The show already had a long wait, now fans will have to hold on to their patience even longer. Another project of Zendaya's that is being delayed is her new sports drama film Challengers. After the trailer was released just last month, the movie was scheduled for November this year and is now being pushed to April 2024. HBO show that is taking another hit as The Last of Us have been delayed . The series was a instant hit and garnered eight Emmy nominations. But, al good things most come to a end.. well at least a halt. Season 2 of the show was instantly confirmed and with that so was the release date. The second season was on track to start filming in early 2024, however, things have changed. Season 2 will now come out no earlier than 2025.

The remake of the classic Broadway play Wicked was almost near completion, before the movie was immediately halted. The film stars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Ervio, and Michelle Yeoh. Part One of the have been filming since late 2022. Grande had reportedly finished filming as other actor have yet reached their completion. While no filming is happening right now, their have been rumors that there is enough that will not affect the release date too much.

There are many other films/ TV shows that follow this fate. Stranger Things, Yellowjackets, Abbott Elementary, Andor, Blade, House of Dragons, and so many more! If you can name it, then more than likely it will be affected. As long the SAG-AFTRA keeps fighter, the more support that will need, so make sure you show your support as the writer/actors continue this long fight.
