Review
This is actually another book that I picked up for my Ultimate Reading Challenge for 2023. The task was to read a graphic novel. I haven't read a graphic novel since undergrad, I also don't usually pick up graphic novels to read for fun. However, that is the beauty of the Ultimate Reading Challenge, it takes you out of your comfort zone. So, I went to Barnes and Noble and picked up the complete edition of Paper Girls. The graphic novel is now a series on Prime Video, so maybe I'll check it out to see if it is accurate to the book.
One of the things that I liked about this book is the diversity among the four main girls. They have their own personality that fits them well actually. The character development of these 12-year-old girls was also good to read. The acceptance of each other and their friendship brought some emotion to this sci-fi action story. Another new thing that I liked is the illustrations. I feel like in traditional novels there are too many words that describe things. Even though the descriptions are beautifully written, sometimes I need a break from the words if that makes sense. In this graphic novel, there were beautiful drawings and gorgeous colors that set up the scenery and setting well.
Something that I had a hard time with is the whole time traveling aspect. In general, I think that no matter what creative media, time traveling will always be a hard concept to interpret. There can be some forgotten characters or unanswered questions. I did have a lot of questions after reading this graphic novel. Also, because this was the complete edition, it was a lot of pages to get through. But, the book reads fast because of all the action and dialogue. If you stumble across this book do not get discouraged because of its thickness of it. The book is like a movie that you are watching. just pay attention and enjoy the ride.
Rating/ Recommend
My rating for this book is 3.6/5 stars and I would recommend it. It's a fun read.
